Captain Courageous and the World of Tomorrow
Have you ever stopped to think about the kind of world you want to live in? I mean, most of us are going to be on this rock for 80 years, plus or minus, maybe more. It’s tempting to think that the planet will take care of itself, but that’s just not the case. The future we’re going to live in is only as good as the way we live today.
It’s up to each of us to make choices that will be kind to the planet. One of the things I’ve done is to get some grocery bags that I bring back to the store with me and use each week. I have some for the Farmer’s Market, some for the regular grocery store, and some for the food co-op I belong to. Instead of bringing home endless plastic bags to throw away I use the same bags over and over.
Now, you probably aren’t responsible for buying your family’s groceries, but you can still reduce, reuse, and recycle. Think about all the places you may be wasting resources, like accepting carrier bags at every store you visit in the mall, buying bottled water or single use batteries, throwing away notebooks that aren’t used up. I have a hunch that if you think about it you can come up with lots of ways you can cut back on consumer waste—that’s all the stuff we throw away every day.
You have to be bold to make choices that take some extra work and thought. (Hey, that’s why it’s Captain Courageous and not Lieutenant Lazy in the World of Tomorrow.) Your reward is living in a world rich in resources and passing it along to future generations. You’ll be able to say, “The world is in good shape today because I cared about it yesterday.”
If you’ve thought of a clever way to care about our world write and tell me about it. My email address is editor@listenmagazine.org. |
